Dinner at Harvey Nichols

When mentioning Harvey Nichols, one thinks of luxury items, at extremely luxury prices! On a recent trip to their 2nd Floor Restaurant in Bristol however, this wasn't the case, on both counts.

I noticed that Harvey Nic's were offering a Christmas Menu which seemed excellent value for money. £15 for 2 courses or £18 for 3 courses, and with it being payday, I felt a treat was needed. As we arrived at the restaurant, we were greeted with 'we are quiet tonight, lots of cancelations', which obviously filled me with confidence right from the get go! We were ushered in to an dining room occupied by two other couples and plonked down at a table, which was actually very nice, in the corner surrounded by windows looking out over the Christmas market and ice rink. Once being given ours menus we were left for 5 minutes before anyone came to take drinks orders, which in a restaurant of three tables was a little tardy. But, hey, it's Christmas, a time for forgiveness.

The Amuse Bouche (above) was to be the scene setter for the rest of the meal, tiny. I realise it is only a appetiser but the whole meal seemed to be downsized to fit the price that was being charged. However, it was tasty, a small crab mousse on toasted Brioche.

The starter was super, a Game Terrine, with cured beetroot and sweet raisin puree. It was sweet and savoury with the earthy flavours of the Beetroot complementing the meaty Game flavours.

The highlight of the meal, as it often is, was the Main Course. Roast Breast of Guinea Fowl, with Parsnip puree and a Truffle vingerette. With wonderful autumnal flavours and seasonality this dish was a delight. The guinea fowl was cooked perfectly and the truffle vinegarette imparted those heady, deep flavours of the forest.

Dessert was a Sticky Pear Pudding, Poached Pear, with Ginger and Maple Syrup Ice Cream. Sweet, sticky, freshness from the Pear's and soft sponge delight, with Ginger and Maple syrup ice cream which finished off the meal really well.

Summary: With lovely decor, and a talented chef in Louisa McCrimmon, Harvey Nichols 2nd Floor Restaurant is a great place to go in Bristol but have the A La Carte Menu if your looking to fill yourself up.
